Classic. Contemporary. Bespoke. Meet Rachel Murdoch

Classic. Contemporary. Bespoke. Meet Rachel Murdoch

Meet the fashion-designer-turned-upcycler giving old furniture a second life.

This month’s Behind the Brush feature shines a light on the wonderfully talented Rachel Murdoch — the heart and hands behind Rachel Murdoch Design.

What began as a part-time creative escape has since flourished into a full-time business. With a background in fashion and tailoring, Rachel’s attention to detail, eye for structure, and love of fabric translated beautifully into the world of furniture upcycling and upholstery.

“I find the history and challenge of each piece fascinating. And knowing you're bringing a loved piece back to life is simply wonderful.”

Signature Style in Three Words?

Classic. Contemporary. Bespoke.

From her studio-shed, you’ll find Rachel painting, upholstering, and breathing new life into pre-loved pieces. Whether it’s sourcing vintage treasures or transforming forgotten furniture, every project is approached with care, creativity and sustainability in mind.

Favourite Project So Far?

A hall seat crafted from two chairs, a roadside bedhead, and a pallet destined for landfill. “It was so much fun repurposing what would otherwise have gone to waste. And seeing it in the beautiful home it now lives in makes my heart sing.”

Her Blake & Taylor Go-To?

“Sage is stunning,” says Rachel. “But honestly, every piece I’ve painted with Blake & Taylor colours has turned out beautifully — the shades pair perfectly with my fabrics.” With a new home brimming with vintage finds, we’ll be seeing plenty more from Rachel and her brush.
